As the Australian Government continues to explore and expand its use of the web to deliver its services and engage with the public, the issue of the use of online advertising arises. This issue has three facets:
Agencies need to be aware of their responsibilities regards government campaigns and online advertising.
All Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997 (FMA Act) agencies are required to make use of the australia.gov.au address in campaigns over $250,000.
Agencies must not sell advertising space or host commercial advertising on their websites.
All FMA Act agencies are required to place their online advertising through the Central Advertising System administered by the Department of Finance and Deregulation.
